The Marching Dukes of Dresden

This wall was first painted with the procession of the Dresden's Dukes who ruled Dresden till 1589. It was principally lime based painting.

Wilhelm walter extended the wall painting between the years 1872 and 1876. It then marked the 800 th anniversary of Dresden's ruling Witten Dynasty. the painter used sgraffito technique, which he was taught by his teacher, Prof. Julius Huebner. This work was not weatherproof. Tiles manufactured in the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, replaced the pinting between 1904 and 1907. These tiles were fitted into a single gap less work. The last Saxon Duke Friedrich Augustus III was left out in this picture.

200 tiles were damaged and had to replaced due to the bombs in February 1945 due to the world war II. Restoration was done between 1979 and 1980.
