Epidemiology of asthma and allergies in childhood and adolescence,

e.g. co-initiator of the worldwide ISAAC (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in

Childhood) project. ISAAC has been recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest

epidemiological study that has been conducted among children and adolescents; nearly 2

million children have been studied.

e.g. calculation of 3300 annual deaths from passive smoking in Germany in 2006. This figure was

taken as the basis for the initiation of legislation for a smoke free environment in Germany.

Teaching


Since 1972 teaching of Social and Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology to medical students, dental students, public health and occupational health physicians at the Hannover Medical School, the Medical Schools of the Universities of Heidelberg and Frankfurt and at the Academies for Occupational and Social Medicine in Munich and Ulm and the Academies of Public Health in Munich and Düsseldorf.

Since 1984 teaching of Epidemiology at the American Heart Association (AHA) 10 day Seminars in CVD Epidemiology at Lake Tahoe, California in 1984, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1998, 1999 and at the European Educational Program in Epidemiology (EEPE) in Florence, in 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2004, and 2006.


Since 1980 organization of International Epidemiology Summer Schools in Munich, Bochum and Münster. 25th anniversary in 2010.


From 1987 to 1993 teaching of Epidemiology, Social Medicine, and Medical Sociology at the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum
