Benutzer:ערן/Wikimania 2018
Sorry in advance that the report is written in English, but I hope you will find it interesting.
First I would like to thank WMDE (especially to Lydia, Martin and Veronika) for offering scholarships for volunteers working on software development areas (Bereich Softwareentwicklung) of Wikimedia Deutschland, and their great organization work before and during the Wikimania. I appreciate their non-trivial work such as translation of documents or having English discussions in the WMDE kick-off for non German speakers. I also had an opportunity to learn how well organized is your chapter. Chapeau!
Unofficial discussions
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]I will start with the unofficial discussions - this is very important part of Wikimania, socializing with other Wikipedians, getting inspired by other projects and sharing experiences. It is somewhat hard to summarize it here, but here are some topics we discussed that I hope dewiki community will find interesting:
- Women categories - During the Wikimania I discussed with Charlie Kritschmar about categories of women - I understand this is hot topic in other projects, same as in hewiki. The current solutions for such categories are somewhat poor (dewiki solution is much better than hewiki). In hewiki there is a seperate category for women in each profession, and women are categorized only in the subcategory not in the general category (example: Israeli writers (general), Israeli women writers); alternatively we have a template to query using Wikidata (Example: Jewish Mathematicians - the first links link to Petscan for men/women selection), but this requires going to external site. I hope we will come up with better solutions, possibly with tags/Wikidata queries (but it should be accessible&simple to readers and easier than queries, and we should discuss about the naming of such categories).
- Meetups - some less official and more open forums for discussions in Wikimania are the meetups. I participated the taxonomy in Wikidata meetup, where other users shared experiences and ideas how to improve the taxonomy in Wikidata so it will be more accessible to other projects. The AI meetup was also interesting, where we discussed about the recent improvements in AI and how we should (and shouldn't) follow the commercial companies in using AI for improving Wikipedia. Following the discussion, I think we should list all the AI related tools we have for better discover-ability and reuse in other projects (currently only ORES is used project-wide).
- Posters - In my opinion some of the highlights in the poster sessions are cool ideas of cscott about using machine translation for translation suggestion tool, and Lydia's posters of Wikidata (quality and lexicographical data) where we discussed about new tools for having better quality and patrolling Wikidata changes, and next steps towards more lexicographical data.
Hackathon
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]The mini-project I took for the hackathon - improving editing of Wikidata from the client (e.g Wikipedia). The first step is showing the values and linking to Wikidata - phab:T199892.
- Background: There is ongoing work of WMF's community tech team on template wizard extension - see more details in meta:Community_Tech/Template_wizard
- As there are more and more templates that relay on Wikidata, I believe it is important to make it easier for Wikipedian to easily access the data in Wikidata - so we can fix any problem right away. Hence I added to this wizard an option to indicate a parameter is taken from Wikidata, and link to edit it on Wikidata. This would also allow other tools to take advantage of this mapping for additional purposes.
- The next steps are to get this patch reviewed and go to production (once the wizard will be completed), and if it works cool, move on to have something similar also in VisualEditor(?).
- I would like to thank Mooeypoo, Niharika, Charlie Kritschmar and Mike Peel for the good inputs and suggestions!
- dewiki community - you are invited to take part in the ongoing discussion phab:T199892 (or if you prefer wiki-style discussions, m:Talk:Community Tech/Template wizard#Integration with Wikidata?).
Some other interesting discussions:
- applying copyvio for page review prioritization - I'm running EranBot in enwiki - bot to detect copyvios (copyright violation). During the Wikimania, I had opportunity to discuss with Catrope and MMiller on the copyright violation detection extension. It looks like there are different approaches for copyvio detection and each have its own benefits.
- Set Western Arabic numeral by default in Arabic projects - Helmoony showed this issue in Arabic Wikipedia. After a quick investigation, this seems to be a "bug" (or missing feature) in the HTML5 spec - where input type=number shows Eastern Arabic numeral (for Arabic language) and doesn't allow the site (Wikipedia) to override it.
Sessions highlights
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]There were many interesting sessions, sometimes requiring hard choices where to go for - especially in the last session (unfortunately I missed Gereon K.'s How to kick-start communities or How to boldly go where no editor has gone before because of conflict with Hackathon show case)
For some of the sessions I also uploaded notes to etherpad.
Here are some of the highlights - I recommend to take a look on the talks descriptions/notes:
- wm2018:Program/Wikidata: building bridges every single day
- wm2018:Program/Building tools to serve diverse users: Community Centered Software Development (etherpad)
- (it was in the same time of wm2018:Program/Real-Time Collaboration: Connecting Humanity, so unfortunately I could only listen to the end of the real time editing presentation)
- wm2018:Program/Senior Citizens write Wikipedia
- wm2018:Program/How wikidata infoboxes can help bridge content and language gaps (etherpad)
- wm2018:Program/Which parts of an article are actually being read? (etherpad)
- wm2018:Program/What does this mean in ...? - building bridges with machine-readable lexicographical data in Wikidata
- wm2018:Program/Hackathon Showcase
Others
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]- Getting to Cape Town: My flight was from Tel Aviv to Cape Town, with connection in Addis Abeba. On the flight to Addis Abeba, I met Keren - WMIL and Maor X. Once we got out of the airport in Cape Town, I met other Wikipedians and Wikimedians. This is really cool experience - Wikipedians easily recognize other Wikipedians they never seen before :)
- South Africa was great, I saw beautiful penguins in Boulders Beach and visited Kap der Guten Hoffnung.
