Aims and Scope

Myrmecological News is an international non-profit journal devoted to ant research. In a lively mix of research and review articles, all fields of myrmecology are covered. Manuscripts are reviewed by at least two independent expert referees prior to acceptance. The journal offers extremely fast publication service with primary editorial decisions made within four weeks after submission for more than 90 % of all manuscripts.

Instructions for authors

Page charges. Page charges are 10 € per black/white and the first colour page, and 25 € for each additional colour page. ÖGEF is happy to 100 % cover costs for articles which deal with the Palaearctic Region or with general myrmecological aspects (but due to their statutes cannot extend sponsoring to other faunal regions); additionally, students as well as any authors from developing countries are invited to apply for exemptions.

Submission of manuscripts. Electronic submission of manuscripts by E-mail is preferred (birgit.florian(at)gmail.com), but submission by conventional mail is likewise accepted (three copies), in the latter case submit to: Herbert Zettel, International Research Institute of Entomology Natural History Museum Vienna, Burgring 7, A-1010 Vienna, Austria

Copyright. Submission of a manuscript implies that the work has not been published before, that it is not submitted for publication elsewhere, that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, and that, if and when the manuscript is accepted, the authors will hand over the transferable copyright to the publisher.

Manuscript preparation. Manuscripts should be written in German or English (British or American English, but consistently throughout the manuscript) and not exceed 25 manuscript pages (including figures and tables). In exceptional cases other languages can be accepted. Authors who use a non-native language should have their manuscripts revised linguistically before initial submission. Manuscripts should be organised as follows: Front page with title; name(s) and address(es) of the author(s) and designation of a contact author in case of more than one author; key words; number of manuscript pages; number of figures and tables. Main body of the manuscript: Title; Author(s); English Abstract; Key words; Address(es); Introduction; Material and methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgments; German Abstract (only for English manuscripts; this can be prepared by the editors if the author has no knowledge of German); References; Table and Figure legends. Avoid footnotes.

Do not use any formatting (including style sheet in the word processing program) except: genus and species names in italics, authors of taxa and publications in small caps. All pages incl. front page should be numbered consecutively. Any other formatting complicates editing of the manuscripts.

Hardcopies must be typed double-spaced on standard size paper (A4 or US Letter).

Species authorities. Give author (small caps) and year of description for each species at its first mention, e.g., Lasius niger (Linnaeus, 1758). Apply this to the abstract and start anew with it in the main text, irrespectively of whether a species has already been mentioned in the abstract or not. Please note that references to species authorities (I) have a comma between author and year, in which they differ from references to the literature; (II) do not entail necessity to list the source under References.

Citation of material examined. Either exactly as given on a specimen label, indicated by quotation marks; or exactly as in the following example (using majuscules for Roman numerals): Austria: Vienna, Johannserkogel (48° 11' N, 16° 31' E), 22.XI.2004, leg. S. Schödl, 2 workers (NHMW).

Voucher specimen repositories. Acronyms of collections should consist of up to four letters for the institution. List acronyms in the Material and methods section.

References. References in the text should be given as follows: Ehrhardt (1987), Hölldobler & Wilson (1990), Buschinger & al. (2003), or in apposition: (Ehrhardt 1987). All references (and no other works) must appear in the References. Do not abbreviate journal titles and places of publication.

Symbols. Contributors are asked to use (and separately explain) common symbols such as $ and § instead of ♂ and ♀.

Tables. Adapted to a width of either 8.1 or 17.0 cm; 9 pt Times New Roman font.

Figures. All figures must be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals (i.e., no combination with letters). Only high-quality figures are accepted, in case of electronic submission saved as a TIF file (minimum resolution 600 dpi at print size). In case of figure plates consisting of mounted photographs, additionally add the uncut originals. If submissions are made by conventional mail, original figures should not be sent in for primary submission. Colour figures are encouraged and partly free of charge.

Digital supplementary materials. Film sequences, excessively large tables and other supplementary material can be deposited at the journal's homepage.

Galley proofs. The contact author receives the galley proofs before printing and is asked to return them with the corrections within three weeks. Manuscripts are printed in the order of receipt of the corrected galley proofs. The contact author is responsible for errors in the printed versions.

Reprints. Twenty reprints are supplied free of charge to the contact author. Additional reprints may be purchased by ordering when galley proofs are returned. In addition, every author is supplied with a PDF version of the printed article.

• Extended Advisory Board. Myrmecological News boasts an enlarged Advisory Board and now has a total of fifteen eminent scientists from all continents that span practically all subfields of myrmecology "on board".

• Scope now covers all biogeographic zones. With immediate effect Myrmecological News now accepts manuscripts on any ant topic from any part of the globe. Unfortunately, page charges still apply as sales of Myrmecological News do not cover the production costs, even though all editorial work is performed honorarily. The publisher, the Austrian Society of Entomofaunistics (ÖGEF), can sponsor articles which deal with the Palaearctic Region or with general myrmecological aspects, but due to their statutes cannot extend sponsoring to other faunal regions. However, all students and any authors from developing countries are invited to apply for exemption from page charges!

Announcements

• Publication of volume 11 scheduled for mid 2008. The concerted effort of authors, referees, board members, and editors makes June or July 2008 a realistic date for print publication of volume 11.

• Web of Science evaluation starts in July 2008. The print-publication of volume 11 will mark an exciting moment: volume 11 will be the first of the three consecutive volumes evaluated for inclusion in the Web of Science. An inclusion would increase the accessibility of articles and would continue to signal the quality of science published to the entire community. However, in times of multinational professional publishers and increased competitiveness this is not easily achieved. Currently, in an intensified interplay between authors, referees, the board, and the editors the preparations for the application are being finalised, to make the journal even stronger for the application and to maximize the chance of success. Increase the impact of Myrmecol. News by citing its papers in your research!

• New face for homepage planned. The homepage of Myrmecological News presently is being completely worked over. The extended, streamlined version will offer a series of new facilities, see below. Presently, the editors prepare the technical and organisational grounds for those features.

• Online-Early planned. From early 2008 Myrmecological plans to offer an Online-Early publication service: fully edited and proof-read articles will be published online as soon as they are ready. Articles published Online-Early will not be changed after their online publication and will be printed identically. Under the current version of the ICZN, online publications per se are not taxonomically significant and authors of publications that ensue changes of zoological nomenclature will thus be able to opt for holding back the online publication of their contributions until the date of the print publication.

• Subscription of online version planned. Myrmecological News already now offers free viewing of the non-printable PDF files of all articles online, but to obtain access to the printable PDF files of all articles, subscription will be necessary. By subscribing the online version you will obtain access to the printable PDF files of all articles of all volumes online.

• Sign-up system for E-alert planned. An online form will be accessible through the journal’s homepage. To receive an E-mail whenever new articles are published Online-Early or print volumes are out, it will simply be necessary to provide an E-mail address online.

• Digitisation of back volumes to be finished by March 2008. Volumes 1 to 5 are currently being converted to PDF format and will be available online by March 2008 the latest.
