De Dion, Bouton & Trépardoux Dampfwagen

Paris–Versailles 1887 war ein frühes Autorennen.

Georges Bouton nahm 1887 mit La Marquise als einziger Teilnehmer in der Klasse der leichten Dampfwagen am Rennen von Neuilly zum Bois de Boulogne und zurück teil. Je nach Quelle fand der Anlass am 20. oder 28. April statt

Er legte die Strecke in 1 Stunde 14 Minuten zurück und erreichte dabei 60 km/h, die Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit betrug knapp 27 km/h.[1] Ausgeschrieben als Zuverlässigkeitsfahrt, gilt diese Veranstaltung als erster Motorsportanlass überhaupt.

Some will argue that everything began on April 28th, 1887. Indeed, car manufacturers were settling in Europe and Mr Fossier, chief editor of Le Vélocipède, decided to organize a race between Neuilly Bridge and the Bois de Boulogne. It seems that this race was about 2 km long. Unfortunately the race was not a real success as there was just one entrant. Indeed, car manufacturers were not so numerous. Moreover the existing cars were not always efficient and reliable... Georges Bouton was at the wheel of the car he created with Count De Dion, the famous De Dion-Bouton. The firm had been created in 1882 and the plant was in Puteaux, very close to the start of this first race. Nowadays, if you go to Puteaux you can spend the night at the hotel De Dion-Bouton, located on the Quai De Dion-Bouton, just in front of Neuilly Bridge... Georges Bouton, the first racing driver in history, won the race as he succeeded in passing the finish line at the speed of...60km/h thanks to a power of 1hp and a 50kg-car!

The mechanical breakthrough, which led to the building of La Marquise, was a new boiler design. The vertical boiler was much shorter and consisted of concentric rings, rather like Russian dolls. The two engines beneath the floor drove close-set back wheels via locomotive cranks. Water was carried in a tank under the seat, coke or coal in a square bunker surrounding the boiler. Coke was withdrawn via drawers at the bottom and poured down a pipe in the center of the boiler onto the fire beneath.

Driving “La Marquise,” Bouton participated in the first motor car race in 1887, (he was the only car to show up) averaging 16 mph for the 20 miles from Paris to Versailles and back and hitting 37 mph on the straights, according to an observer who timed him. The next year, De Dion in “La Marquise” beat Bouton on a three-wheeler, at an average of 18 mph. http://rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?lot_id=826757
