1.1 en:Wikipedia:VIAF/errors#Wikipedia article is not the same as the VIAF identity

perhaps intended for VIAF clusters that are valid except for including a bad link to EN.wiki

the VIAF identity linked by our AC data in the biography footer? or the VIAF bundle that points to the biography? The latter is simply a special case of 3.--VIAF merges different identities (into one cluster)-- where a link to EN.wiki in particular is bundled by VIAF with other records that it does not fit.

Peter Abrahams has been fixed at VIAF; one VIAF bundle now uniquely points to the EN.wiki biography

currently seventh listing

  • Bernard Evans Ward - not Vorlage:Viaf. Our article is about a british-american painter who died in 1933; the VIAF entry is about some cleric who was president of St. Edmund's College and who died in 1920. Lupo 13:52, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

2013-12-23, I added correct AC data to both biographies Bernard Evans Ward and Bernard Nicholas Ward. I added the VIAF id to Evans at WikiData but was not able to add a source. "Add links" for Nicholas returns the notice "You need to be logged in on this wiki and in the central data repository to use this feature." --so I added nothing.

last of several posted by Andrew Gray:

2013-12-23, biog gives no AC data. History of VIAF ID:113999310 reports that the bad link to EN.wiki was added only 2012-11-26, six weeks after Gray's report, and was deleted 2013-01-14.

first of dozens posted by Struway2

2013-12-23, biog gives no AC data. VIAF still gives the bad wikilink --labeled on mouseover "Wikipedia (en)-test ...". The same is true of the second case in Struway's batch.

1.2 en:Wikipedia:VIAF/errors#Two or more VIAF identities for the same article

The first entry by Andrew Gray reports multiple VIAF bundles that include links to one EN.wiki biography.
Subsequent reports evidenty confuse this class (which may be tiny) with class 1.4.

1.3 en:Wikipedia:VIAF/errors#VIAF merges different identities (into one cluster)

perhaps intended to exclude VIAF bundles that are valid except for links to EN.wiki biographies
perhaps intended for bundles that combine valid records of multiple people, as an invalid record should be reported directly to the authority

1.4 en:Wikipedia:VIAF/errors#Parallel VIAF clusters for one identity

1.5 en:Wikipedia:VIAF/errors#Wikipedia link inside VIAF is out of date

2013-12-23, both reports, more than a year old, concern VIAF links to redirects that were promptly deleted

1.6 en:Wikipedia:VIAF/errors#Articles about multiple people assigned the VIAF identity for one of them

in joint/collective biography footer or at VIAF?

1.7 en:Wikipedia:VIAF/errors#Other errors

Andrew, Are you still working on authority control (espy Wikipedia reporting to VIAF and others) or has that passed with your year as Wikipedian in residence?

If yes, how do you think Wikipedia:VIAF/errors should be maintained? For instance, spot check of section 1.1 shows that the last of your 2012-10-10 batch, G. Thomson, is fixed at VIAF. But the first two in next day's batch by User:Struway2, both footballers, have not been fixed. That is, our biographies no longer link the VIAF bundles (something Struway may have fixed at the time of report--perhaps as intended or even taken for granted?), but the VIAF bundles still include inappropriate links to our biographies.

IIUC, this section is intended for VIAF bundles that clearly identify someone, in that the bundles are valid except for their wikilinks, but they include links to wrong biographies. Section 1.3 is for VIAF bundles that are mistaken if we ignore their wikilinks.

Your own first entry in section 1.2 suggests that the purpose was to report multiple VIAF bundles that include wikilinks to the same biography. In contrast to section 1.4. Most if not all subsequent reports belong in section 1.4, because they concern VIAF bundles that need merging; ordinarily only one, if any, of those bundles includes any wikilink.

--P64 (Diskussion) 22:56, 23. Dez. 2013 (CET) IIUC section 1.2

Introduction

2.1.1 Common formulas

For a person: [country] [career person is known for] (Examples: American singer, songwriter, and actress or German politician, 8th Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany)

... "These formulae serve as good starting points"

2.5 Place the location at the end

Description: bishop and saint from Armenia

Don't use 'Armenian bishop' as that format doesn't work well for people from the Netherlands, the republic of Ireland or the USA because the words "Dutch", "Irish" and "American" have multiple meanings in some languages.

Sven ?
  • my WikiData work 2013-11-21 (in two page histories) and 2014-01-16 (the former only)
Remark: 22 days later Dexbot imported place of death from EN; 37 days later KrBot imported VIAF and LCCN from EN. Both added "English Wikipedia" as the source. I suppose such robotic work (editing item pages) is ongoing and that it follows eventually and automatically from linking WD items to EN articles; that is, from my work (editing the same page).

Today I added a second place of birth, from EN; the first, from IT, is less reliable. I am not able to add a source; when I select "add source" I get a composition window with the option to cancel only, not to save. This matches my experience on previous serious visits to WD, perhaps monthly during Fall 2013. No option to save a source.

Does the project depend on merger of items such as these two? The second page history [6] shows that Spanish- and Dutch-language descriptions

I am the source for the identification established -11-21 although I did not add VIAF and LCCN data manually. If/when I know how to add a source, should that be "English Wikipedia", which became a source when I edited the biography?

How do I add Italian Wikipedia and English Wikipedia as the sources for the two birth places?

Frustrating documentation 2014-01-16

  • Description - a) above; b) please add a link to the guideline (not that most target pages are useful, eg BnF)
  • Sources - so what do i do to add a source, after entering a value in the add-source composition window?
  • Aliases - so all known pseudonyms should be added? (why not concatenate the Pseudonyms field from EN infobox writer?)
