Martina Morger (born 1989) is a multi-disciplinary performance artist based between Northern Germany, Liechtenstein and Eastern Switzerland[1] who works in performance and installation, video, and sculpture. She is best known for her public interventions and performances drawn from objects and occurences of everyday life.[2]
Early life and education
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Born in Vaduz, Morger spent her teenage years between Liechtenstein and the neighbouring states of St. Gallen in Switzerland and Vorarlberg in Austria actively pursued an interest in dancing and singing.[3]
She completed a BA from the University of Zurich in Media & Communication in 2010 before redirecting her practice to Fine Arts in 2015. She received a BA in Fine Arts at the Zurich University of Arts and in Transmedia Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 2018 and a MA in Fine Arts Practice at the Glasgow School of Arts in 2019.[4]
Themes
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Morger’s practice reflects on the embodied experience of change and separation in shared spaces and often intends to initiate "moments of communal witnessing" by drawing awareness to subversive potentials in public settings.[5]
Recurring motifs
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Washing and gestures of affection towards objects on public display occurred both in Lèche Vitrines (2020) and Cleaning Her (2017).[6][7] Platters in Serving (2021) and buckets in Window Shopping (2021) appear in continuous reference to past performances Cleaning and Alles Hat Ein Ende (2018) respectively as discarded objects.[8] Absent and decaying items feature prominently in Morger’s work,[9] serving as foils to desired articles in Distant Lover (2021)[10] and being central in Fossils (2022).
