Benoît Musy (* 13. Dezember 1917 in Fribourg; † 7. Oktober 1956 in Linas, Frankreich) war ein Schweizer Motorrad- und Automobilrennfahrer.

Herkunft, Werdegang und politisches Wirken

Benoît Musy wurde in Friboug als Sohn des Politikers und Bundesrates Jean-Marie Musy geboren. Er hatte sechs Geschwister. Sein ältester Bruder Pierre Musy wurde 1936 Olympiasieger im Viererbob und war später Chef der Schweizer Nachrichtendienste und Militärattaché in der Schweizer Botschaft in Paris. Die Familie lässt sich bis ins 14. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen. Grossvater Pierre-Joseph Musy war Staatsrat während der Zeit des Sonderbunds gewesen (1846–1847).[1] After graduating from secondary schools in Bern, Benoît received his degree in agricultural engineering. His military duties led him to the appointment of Lieutenant and military pilot. From 1938 to 1948, he worked in the agriculture business.

1950 heiratete er Manuela Consuelo Heusch (1927–1979), die Tochter des deutschen Ingenieurs und Industiellen Eduard Friedrich Hugo Heusch, an industrialist from Barcelona Spain. One child was born from the marriage of Benoît and Consuelo: Edouard-Jean. Af

In 1947, he was the first military skydiver, and he obtained the number 2 licence. As a civil and military pilot, he logged over 1,700 landings. In 1944, during World War II Benoit had accompanied his father, Jean-Marie Musy to Germany, to participate in negotiations to liberate 1,200 prisoners from German concentration camps.

From 1947 to 1953 Musy raced Moto Guzzi motorcycles on a professional basis. He was given the title of Swiss Champion (250 cc and 500 cc) six times nationally and internationally.

It was always Benoît's wish to race on four wheels, as he felt that motorcycle racing was an excellent preparation to drive race cars in the future. In 1954 he switched to racing cars by purchasing a Maserati A6-GCS (two liters - sport) from the famous Maserati factory headed by Mr. Orsi.

Unfortunately, his life came to an end on the 7th of October 1956 at the steering wheel of a Maserati 200S in Montlhéry France. The car's steering column broke while turning on a speed bank, and Benoît Musy could not control his car to avoid the accident.

In 1958 Benoît Musy's wife, Consuelo Heusch Musy, sold the Maserati 300S (chassis No. 3057) to the Angola Racing team. The car was raced for several seasons with some mechanical modification, and subsequently it was left unattended for almost three decades in a garage in Africa. Fortunately, in the late 1980's a car enthusiast, Mr. Stein Johnsen, rescued the car and in the UK, the 300S underwent a complete restoration process. In 1994 after two years of painstaking craftsmanship the car emerged like new. Since the new Milleneum, the Maserati 300S has been back on the race track competing in a series of races under the banner of the "Old-Timer Grand Prix," such as at Nürburgring 2001 and throughout Europe.

Motorsportkarriere

In 1954 Musy moved to car racing, first competing with a 2-litre Maserati A6GCS. He scored second places at Spa-Francorchamps, Zandvoort and in the Preis von Bremgarten, in Bern, behind his country fellow Willy Daetwyler who then drove Alfa Romeo 412S.The highest profile event in which Musy competed that year was the Tourist Trophy at Dundrod, then a World Sportscar Championship round, held on 11 September. He shared a works Maserati A6GCS with Cesare Perdisa in that event, but they were disqualified for receiving outside assistance during the race.

The following year Musy achieved his first outright win, conquering the Grand Prix des Frontières at tough Chimay circuit - when he also set the fastest lap of the race. Then he acquired a new 3-litre Maserati 300S in which he finished fifth in the Swedish Grand Prix at Kristianstad, and second in the Kanonloppet at Karlskoga, behind Gunnar Carlsson's Ferrari 750 Monza. Later that season Musy obtained a fourth place in the Grand Prix de Spa-Francorchamps. In autumn of 1955 he was invited to drive a Maserati 200SI in the Targa Florio together with Italian Fernando Mancini, but a problem with the oil piping forced them into a withdraw on fifth lap.

Musy won again the Grand Prix des Frontières in Chimay a second time in 1956, finishing it ahead of Duncan Hamilton's Jaguar D-type, and of thrid-placed Graham Whitehead in a Aston Martin DB3S. Must then returned to his own Maserati, painted blue with a broad with stripe, and with it he obtained a third place in the in the Portugal Grand Prix held at Oporto, behind the Ferraris of winner Alfonso de Portago and second place driver Phil Hill. Musy tried his luck again at Kristianstad, but the 1956 edition of the Swedish Grand Prix - where he shared his car with André Simon - proved to be frustrating as the two were not ablate finish the race. Must then was classified fifth in the Bari Grand Prix, in the Adriatic Cost of Italy, before winning this second race of 1956 - now at the Grand Prix de Les Sables d'Olonne, in western France, on 15 July.

Muse's status as a reliable driver was in an upswing,and as such the Officine Maserati team invited him to once again drive a works car - now at the Gran Premio de Venezuela in Caracas, scheduled for 04 November. Before that, though, Musy enter his 200S at the main sportscar race at the Coupe du Salon de l'Auto de Paris - a series of events held at Linas-Montlhéry on 07 October as part of the festivities surrounding the Paris auto show. That race, named "Sport International", was a 24-lap affair over the 6.283-kilometer variant named "Troisième Circuit" which included the Anneau de Vitesse and the virage à Couard, covering a total of just over 150 kilometers. Musy's Maserati was entered in the group for cars with engines between 1.5 and 2 litres and received the number 30 for the race - although many reports incorrectly assign it the 38.

The race was held under wet conditions - and a serious accident took place on the very first laps when Louis Rosier's Ferrari 750 Monza crashed and overturned at the Courbe Antonio Ascari, gravely injuring the French driver.

Unfazed, Musy pressed for the lead of the race, closely following Hernando da Silva Ramos' 3-litre Gordini T15S. In that frantic pursuit Musy set the fastest lap of the race, at an average speed of 155.358 km/h. Then, on the eighth lap, tragedy struck. The steering column of Musy's Maserati broke at one of the banked corners of the high-speed ring of Linas-Montlhéry; the driver lost control of the car, which veered left and then went straight over the edge of the rélévé at more than 240 km/h (149 mi/h). It crash-landed some 100 meters further, having plunged 18 meters below, on the back side of the banking. On its way down, the car nicked the wall of a small building and then was thrown on a parked transport truck. The car bounced a second time, and Musy was ejected from his seat and crushed on the ground. Although emergency services quickly came to help, Musy died on the spot. Several by-standers were also injured in the accident.

Musy's wife, 29-nine-year old Consuelo Manuela Heusch, was watching the race from the pits. Consuelo, born and raised in Barcelona, did not have a good command of the French language, si she asked Spanish racer Alfonso de Portago to accompany her in the ambulance to the hospital. Portago, fluent in French, promptly agreed, sadly the news about Musy were the worst possible, and nothing could be done for him. Besides Consuelo Benoît Musy was also survived by their young son, Édouard-Jean.

Three weeks later the events of the 1956 Coupe du Salon de l'Auto de Paris would be further darkened as Rosier, having never recovered from his accident, died in a hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine.

Musy's Maserati 200S, chassis #3057 was later sold to the Angola Racing Team.

Tödlicher Unfall

Although Musy demonstrated an interest in motorsports at a young age, the arrival of World War II meant that he only started his racing career at age 29, competing in motorcycle events. It didn't take long for Musy to prove his talent: riding Moto Guzzi machines, he won the 250 cm3 class of the Swiss Motorcycle Championship four years in a row, from 1948 to 1951. This latter year Musy also conquered the title in its 500 cm3 class.

An der Alten Moritzburger Straße im Dresdner Ortsteil [[Gomlitz]] wurde ihm ein Gedenkstein errichtet und dahinter im April 2013 von Mitgliedern des Vereins Freunde des Historischen Motorradrennsportes „Ewald Kluge“ Weixdorf e. V. anlässlich des 75. Jahrestags seines Sieges bei der Tourist Trophy die Ewald-Kluge-Eiche gepflanzt, die damit zu den [[Liste der Gedenkbäume in Dresden|Gedenkbäumen in Dresden]] gehört.
