Martin Butler ist Professor und Direktor des Instituts für Anglistik und Amerikanistik an der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg.

Werdegang und Leben

Martin Butler hat von 1998-2003 an der Universität von Duisburg-Essen Englisch und Sozialwissenschaften studiert. Nach seinem ersten Staatsexamen 2003 arbeitete er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Institut für Wirtschaftswissenschaften sowie als Lehrender im Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik. Im Jahr 2007 promovierte er dann an der Universität Duisburg-Essen mit einer Arbeit über die Lieder des amerikanischen Volkssängers Woody Guthrie. Anschließend arbeitete er für 3 Jahre als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Institut für Anglophone Studien.

2010 zog es ihn dann nach Oldenburg (Oldb.), wo er zunächst eine Juniorprofessur und seit 2016 eine Professur für Amerikanische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften an der Carl von Ossietzky Universität innehatte.

Arbeitsschwerpunkte

Die Populärkultur und deren Theorien sowie kulturelle Mobilität und Transkulturalität insbesondere im nordamerikanischen Kontext zählen zu seinen Arbeitsschwerpunkten. Des Weiteren hat er DIVERSITAS (Diversity Studies International Teaching And Scholarship Network) gegründet. Es handelt sich hierbei um ein internationales und interdisziplinäres Forschungsnetzwerk, das sich mit verschiedenen Formen kultureller Diversität in globalisierten Kontexten auseinandersetzt.

Auszeichnungen

Butler wurde unter anderem mit dem Lehrpreis der Universität Duisburg-Essen (2009) ausgezeichnet.
