The history of Loki*

• The nickname of the club stems from the word „Lokomotív” (Locomotive), and was given to the club due to its ties to the Hungarian Railways

The club was founded on 12th March 1902. Originally it was called "Egyetértés Futball Club", but later became independent and was named "Debreceni Vasutas Sport Club". In the following 100 years, the club win the Hungarian Championship title 2005, 2006, 2007. Managed to finish at third place twice and was crowned Hungarian Cup winners - also on two occassions. The Loki has also played a number of European cup games, and has given a number of players to the National XI.

The beginnings: The club started to play in the so-called Northern Championships between 1920-26, where they won the title 5 times. In 1926 Hungary experienced something new: professional football which had a very unfortunate effect on DVSC. Bocskay FC was formed then, from the players of DVSC, DKASE and DTE and it ruled the Debrecen football scene for one and a half decades. They won the cup in 1930, then finished third in the 1933-34 championships. Meanwhile, DVSC was struggling in lower divisions… 1940 brought about some shanges again: the amateur-professional division of players was abolished, Bocskay FC could not continue fielding a team due to financial reasons, so DVSC became the no.1 team of the city again. The struggle to reach the 1st Division thus began. DVSC reached this goal in 1942-43, but was relegated again four years later. In the next 50 years, the team was relegated 7 more times, and in 1967 the fans were dissapointed even further: DVSC had to start the new season in the third division…

Although the founders had chosen the colours the team uses today (red and white), in the early decades the team used a number of different colours: in 1925 it was green and white and from 1937 the home kit used purple and white colours. The end of the II. World War saw the return of the original red and white, and it continued to be the colour of the club - with the brief intervention of a yellow and blue version when two teams of the city joined together to form the short-lived DMVSC Football Club.

The socialist regime and its policy towards sports has had its effects on Debrecen and its beloved football club as well. The name of the team has changed a mumber of times: it became "Debreceni Vasutas Sport Egyesület" in 1948-49, was changed into "Debreceni Lokomotív" (hence the nickname) in 1949, was changed again into "Debreceni Törekvés" in the 1955-56 season, and was known as "Debreceni Vasutas SC" from 1957 to 1979. 1979 was the year of the fusion mentioned above, the two clubs - DVSC and DMTE - joined forces for only ten years, changed their colours and called themselves DMVSC. Since 1989, the club has been known as DVSC.

The most successful era of the club began in 1993, when the team won promotion to the Hungarian 1st Division. Under the lenadership of the coach, Lajos Garemvölgyi, DVSC reached its highest ever position in the Hungarian 1st Division in the following year, by grabbing third place. In 1999 the team won the Hungarian Cup, and repeated this feat agian, in 2001. In the differebt European cup competitions DVSC has had the chance to play against teams like Wolfsburg FC from Germany and Girondins de Bordeaux from France who barely managed to scarpe through against DVSC following their 3-1 defeat in Debrecen.

In the 2003/2004 season Debrecen finished 3rd in the 1st Division and 2nd in the Hungarian Cup final, securing its place among the 128 European teams qualifying for the UEFA Cup. In 2004/2005, 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 the team win the Championship title.
