He was white, not Afroamerikaner.

He was my great-grandmother's uncle, and we have no African DNA in our family. He was one of 2 white men known to have been lynched in the history of the state of Maryland. The Baltimore Sun newspaper reported his race correctly at the time. I am the great-great grandson of his brother George Vermillion, who was also arrested at the same time as Joseph, and was still in the jail when his brother was lynched.
