Was arrested by the Germans in 1940 in Holland, where he was on leave at the time, and sent to Buchenwald, where he spent two years, after which he was transferred to a camp in Holland. Before his appointment to Rangoon, he had served for two years as First Secretary at Madrid. His arrival in Rangoon coincided with Dutch police action in Indonesia, and he was immediately subjected to hostile demonstrations by students. nach: Paul Preston, Michael Partridge, Antony Best: British documents on foreign affairs:reports and papers from the Foreign Office confidential print.
