Dieser Artikel gibt eine Übersicht über das System der Provincial Parks in der kanadischen Provinz Ontario. Verwaltet werden die Parks von Ontario Parks, einer Abteilung im Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. Rechtliche Grundlage für die Parks ist der Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act (S.O. 2006, c. 12) von 2006 in der aktuellen Fassung.[1]

Im Jahr 2021 gab es in der Provinz 335 Provincial Parks mit einer Gesamtfläche von 74.218,47 km², was einem Anteil von 6,9 % an der Provinzfläche entspricht.[2] Der erste Park, der Algonquin Provincial Park, wurde 1893 eingerichtet.[3] Ihm folgte im Jahr 1894 als zweiter der Rondeau Provincial Park. Erst 1954 wurden dann fünf weitere Parks eingerichtet und 1960 nochmals 45 neue Parks, bevor dann in den 1980er Jahren die Masse der heutigen Parks eingerichtet wurden.

Klassifizierung

Nach dem Gesetz werden die Parks einer der nachfolgenden Gruppen zugeordnet („Classification of provincial parks“):[4]

  • Wilderness Class Parks
    Das Ziel dieser Parks besteht darin, große Gebiete zu schützen, in denen sich die Natur frei entfalten kann und Besucher sich nur mit nicht-mechanisierten Mitteln fortbewegen dürfen.
  • Nature Reserve Class Parks
    Das Ziel dieser Parks besteht darin, repräsentative Ökosysteme und provinziell bedeutende Elemente des Naturerbes Ontarios, einschließlich charakteristischer natürlicher Lebensräume und Landschaftsformen, zu schützen.
  • Cultural Heritage Class Parks
    Das Ziel dieser Parks besteht darin, Elemente des unverwechselbaren kulturellen Erbes Ontarios aufgrund ihres intrinsischen Wertes zu schützen.
  • Natural Environment Class Parks
    Das Ziel dieser Parks besteht darin, hervorragender Erholungslandschaften, repräsentativer Ökosysteme und provinziell bedeutender Elemente des Natur- und Kulturerbes Ontarios zu schützen.
  • Waterway Class Parks
    Das Ziel dieser Parks besteht darin, Freizeitwasserwege und repräsentative sowie bedeutende terrestrische und aquatische Ökosysteme zu schützen.
  • Recreational Class Parks
    Das Ziel dieser Parks besteht darin, eine Vielzahl von Outdoor-Freizeitmöglichkeiten in einer attraktiven Naturumgebung bereitzustellen.

Verwaltung

Die Parks werden in der Regel durch Ontario Parks, ein Behörde der Regierung der Provinz Ontario, welche dort dem Ministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Parks untersteht, betrieben.

„nein“ bedeutet, dass es sich um einen Non-operating Park handelt. Solche Non-operating Park wurden zwar offiziell eingerichtet und werden von der Öffentlichkeit genutzt, aber es werden Einrichtungen und Dienstleistungen nur minimal oder gar nicht bereitgestellt und für ihre Nutzung werden normalerweise keine Gebühren erhoben.[5]
