Glamorous 2 on toolserver(3 December 2012: Henrik at stats.grok.se closed access because the demand (for my scripts, most likely) overloaded his server. Solution: Wait for Wikimedia to get their own stats server, Kraken, up-and-running (it apparently works already on labs). Until then, not much I can do.)

Q: What does the stats measure?
A: Page views.
Q: Where does the data come from?
A: Domas Mituzas put together a system to gather access statistics from wikipedia's squid cluster and publishes it here. This site is a mere visualizer of that data.
Q: What is the logic for redirects and when a page gets moved do the stats move?
A: It counts the title the page was accessed under, so redirects and moves will unfortunately split the statistics across two different statistics pages.
Q:Is the data reliable?
A: It is easily susceptible to deliberate attacks and manipulations, but for most articles it should give a fair view of the number of views. I wouldn't base any important decisions on these stats.

Wikipedia page views, a global perspective (2) Zachte, January 14, 2010 released new wikistats reports, Wikipedia Page Views By Country and Per Wikipedia Language. (Like the other mentioned reports these are also based on the sampled server logs. One in thousand server accesses are logged and stored for a limited time for analysis purposes. (...) The 1:1000 sampled squid logs are scanned one day at a time. Counts per day are added to monthly totals. Since each record stands for thousand original server accesses, totals are multiplied by 1000. The counts do not include page requests by bots (crawlers, spiders, etc). Many bots make themselves known by sending identifying infomation with the page requests. Filtering those is easy. Unfortunately quite a few bots chose to stay anonymous. On average for every thousand pages viewed on one day by one person just one server request ends up in the log. (on average meaning it can be zero on one day, two on a another). But thousand page views is a huge amount for an ordinary person. By far the most ip addresses that occur more than once on a single day are bots, which can easily issue many thousands of page requests on a day. Therefore all ip addresses that occur more than once are skipped. A few very avid readers may thus be missing (false negatives). A huge school that sends all outgoing traffic over one ip address may also result in a handful of log records, that are discarded (again false negatives). At the other hand anonymous bots with modest activity may appear only once in the log and be counted (false positives). I am confident that these minor unavoidable imprecisions have little influence on final results. Note: do not mistake the page views presented in the reports for visits or even unique visitors. Those are entirely different metrics that can not be deduced from the sampled log.)
(Rowan: I've grepped the sampled (1:1000) Squid logs for September 23rd, 24th and 25th, and I do indeed see that a vast, vast majority of requests for that article come from a single IP. In fact, I got output like this (...) which means that in the sampled log (we don't keep full access logs, only a 1:1000 sample) for September 24th, of the 1550 logged requests, 1548 came from our guy and 2 came from different, random people. This doesn't mean there were only 1550 visits to that page that day; due to the sampling, the real number is roughly near 1550*1000 = 1.55 million, which matches the 1.6M reported by stats.grok.se well enough. (...) So I guess this was just one IP hitting the same article ~1.5 million times per day for 3-4 days, for whatever reason.)

Fig. 2 represents one months' views on Wikipedia graphed against a Zipf distribution (a distribution where the most frequent item will occur approximately twice as often as the next item, three times as often as the third item, and so forth.) The top 25 most viewed pages represent 4% of all total views, and the top 5000 represent 19% of all views. Though the distribution has an extremely long tail, the top 5000 data provides an opportunity to locate popular but poorly written articles that need attention, as opposed to randomly selecting one of the 4.15 million remaining articles on the project. That is not to say that articles deep in the long tail are less important, but for editors interested in prioritizing article improvement based on popularity and effect on public perception, the en:WP:5000 data is an important tool.)
